The Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Ratings™ is a system that is designed to provide those searching for legal representation with a method of identifying and evaluating lawyers so that they can choose the right one for their situations. The rating system provides users with an objective measurement of a lawyer’s ethical standards and professional abilities, based on reviews from their peers in the legal field.
How are the ratings determined?
The Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Ratings™ are based upon a lawyer achieving a Very High General Ethical Standards rating as well as a Legal Ability numerical rating. The General Ethics Standards rating is indicative of the lawyer’s adherence to high professional standards of ethical practice and conduct, reliability, diligence, and other relevant criteria. After a lawyer has met the criteria for Very High General Ethical Standards, they can move to the next step of the rating process.
The second step of the rating process involves the lawyer’s Legal Ability rating. Legal Ability ratings involve five main areas, and the lawyer’s performance in each area is rated on a scale of 1 to 5.
- Legal Knowledge: The lawyer’s knowledge of the laws involved in their specific practice area(s)
- Analytical Capabilities: The lawyer’s ability when analyzing legal matters and then applying technical knowledge
- Judgment: The lawyer’s presentation of the important factors that drive the outcome of a case
- Communication Ability: The lawyer’s abilities to communicate compellingly and credibly
- Legal Experience: The lawyer’s level of experience in their specific practice area(s)
The highest rating range that can be achieved in the Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Ratings™ is that of AV Preeminent®, which is only awarded to lawyers who earn a score of 4.5 to 5.0. Attorney T.
